I have studied Shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute, during a two years stay in Japan (1990-1992).
I was studying in two schools, Kinko and Meian.

Studying in two schools is a rare thing and unaccepted in the Japanese culture, which is strict in loyalty to the school (Ryu). This way, I had the opportunity to compare and investigate the differences between the schools in terms of the instrument, the notation and the modifications that pieces from the traditional Honkyoku repertoire had underwent through.

I have interviewed teachers from the two schools and asked them how do they perceive fundamental differences between the schools.

This website I have prepared musical transcriptions of some Honkyoku pieces and also used the Melograph to analyze the music.
By configuring spectral analysis of the Shakuhachi notes, I have noticed the implication of the Yin-Yang principle in the music.
