SHAKUHACHI and GENDER
As many things in the Japanese Culture are separated by sociological levels and dichotomized for men and women,
the Shakuhachi is traditionally played by men.
As a foreign female, I had a special experience of studying the men's instrument.
Although it started to function as a musical instrument, the Shakuhachi it is still being played by men only.
As a foreign female, I had a special experience of stuying the Shakuhachi.
I was a woman who insisted to study a men's instrument.
Since my stay in Japan, at the beginning of the 1990's, more Japanese women play the Shakuhachi.
In an interesting study by Women and the Shakuhachi,
six Japanese women were interviewed.
Some of them studied Shakuachi from their father, who is a Shakuhachi player, or in Tokyo Fines Arts and Music University.
